What is the treatment for lymphoedema?

The advised treatment for lymphoedema is decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT). It does not cure lymphoedema, but it can help control the symptoms.

There are four parts to this therapy which include:

• compression bandages to reduce further build-up
• massage to reduce the swelling
• exercise to get the affected muscles moving
• skin care to ease any discomfort and to avoid chances of infection.

The main goal for treating lymphoedema is to reduce inflammation and control symptoms. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of each individual case, but can include self-care measures such as:

• Exercise, with your medical team’s guidance
• Manual lymph drainage
• Compression bandaging/garments/stockings/sleeves
• Skin care products designed specifically for lymphoedema patients
• Special diet plans that reduce salt intake and increase water consumption
• Lifestyle changes that help manage symptoms over time

In addition to these strategies for managing symptoms associated with lymphoedema on an ongoing basis, it is also important for people living with this condition to receive regular follow-up care from healthcare professionals who specialise in treating this condition. This will allow them to monitor progress with treatment plans and make adjustments where necessary if needed. Surgical procedures, medication, and therapeutic treatments such as laser therapies are all options for treatment.

How is lymphoedema diagnosed?

Lymphoedema diagnosis involves a physical examination by a medical professional as well as imaging tests such as computed tomography (CT) scans or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These tests help determine if there are any blockages that may be causing an obstruction in the lymphatic flow.

Once diagnosed with lymphoedema, it is important to follow a doctor’s instructions to manage the condition. For products tailored to the needs of those with lymphoedema check out our CuraLymph collection
