Lumpectomy Recovery and Aftercare

Every type of breast cancer treatment requires careful aftercare for a comfortable recovery. A lumpectomy is no different. Although a less invasive procedure, it’s still crucial to give importance to your post-surgery journey.

What is a Lumpectomy?

A lumpectomy procedure is when cancer or other abnormal tissue is removed from the breast, including a small amount of the healthy tissue that surrounds it. A lumpectomy is typically for early-stage breast cancer and is commonly followed by radiation therapy to decrease the odds of the cancer recurring.

Lumpectomy Surgery Aftercare

Recovery and aftercare look different for everyone, however, there are certain things everyone can do to make the journey easier.

1. Rest your body - This is one of the most important parts of the recovery process, it’s important for you to take things slow, to allow your body the time and space to heal. Avoid any strenuous activities for a while, including any heavy lifting and intense exercise.

2. Rest your mind – Surround yourself with people that lift you up, read and watch the things you enjoy the most and give yourself regular breaks to enjoy some ‘me time’.

3. Eat well – Eat nourishing food that will encourage healthy healing. Check in with your healthcare team and find out if there are any foods you should avoid or include in your diet.

As well as all the things you can do for yourself, make sure you stay in regular contact with your medical team and go for regular check-ups.

How Long is Recovery After Lumpectomy?

Recovery is not the same for everyone. It’s best to consult your doctor and medical team, but it typically takes a couple of weeks to recover after a lumpectomy. Scarring, swelling and any sensitivity all take different times to heal.

Lumpectomy recovery and aftercare require a lot of rest and regular medical check-ups. Be patient with your body and take on board all the advice your doctor gives you. Post-surgery life may take some time getting use to but with the right advice it can be a smoother ride.
