Looking after your breast form or shaper

If you're wearing a breast form or shaper, it's important to look after it to keep it in great condition. By cleaning it daily, storing it properly & keeping it away from sharp items, you'll help it last longer too.

The importance of proper care

A breast form or shaper is designed to be like part of your body, so it's important to treat it like part of your body.

Cleaning

How often should you clean your breast form or shaper?

As often as you clean yourself!

The form is covered with a polyurethane film, it is a porous film so it can take on the odours of what it's exposed to. Regularly cleaning your prosthesis removes sweat, skin cells & body oils.

Wash your form by hand. We recommend using a mild detergent, like our soft cleanser to clean the form. Avoid using soap or body wash, which can leave a film on the form. Lather up the cleanser, then rinse in clean, warm water. If you are cleaning an Adapt Air, Adapt Air Contact or Balance Adapt Air, do not submerge it in water. Due to the one way valve, water cannot be removed from the air pocket.

Dry the form well with soft towel or tissue.

If you are wearing a Contact breast form, you will need to scrub the adhesive backing. Watch how to clean a Contact breast form

Once clean & dry, store the form in the cradle of the box that it came in, this will help it retain it's shape.

Please don't use other chemicals to clean your prosthesis. Some substances can damage the form including:

  • Alcohols such as ethanol, propanol or butanol, especially when used at the same time as organic, low-molecular substances like insect repellent or sunscreen
  • Ethyl acetate & other esters
  • Acetone

Proper storage

When you've finished wearing your prosthesis for the day, make sure you store it in the provided case or a designated container to protect it from dust, sunlight and moisture. Ensure they are completely dry before storage to prevent mould or mildew growth.

Make sure that you store the form in a safe place, where it can't be stepped on.

Maintaining your prosthetic

Avoid sharp items

Please handle your breast form or shaper carefully. Sharp or pointy items including pins, animal claws, nail files, thorns, scissors etc can damage the breast form.

Regular inspections

From time to time inspect your breast form for any signs of damage, such as tears or changes in colour. Keeping an eye on them means you can spot any issues that might cause discomfort easily.

Avoid direct sunlight

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can impact the colour and durability of your form. When not in use, keep them in a cool, dark place to avoid fading or damage.

Temperature considerations

Extreme temperatures, whether too hot or too cold, can affect the silicone material that your form is made from. Avoid leaving your prosthetics in places with extreme temperatures.

By sticking to these simple cleaning and maintenance practices, you can keep your breast form and shaper looking and feeling good for even longer.
