Exercise After Breast Cancer Surgery

An Amoena collab for you: Take10 videos with Coach Joslynn

Coach Jos exercise after breast cancer surgery

Exercise after breast cancer surgery can be a daunting prospect. Women are advised in so many different ways, from "Rest and don't dare exercise," to "Start exercising immediately," -- and everything in between.

Coach Joslynn Peterson (@bodyenroute) had to learn, herself, how best to exercise after breast cancer surgery. A breast cancer previvor, Coach Jos had a prophylactic double mastectomy at age 26. Already an elite athlete, competitor and coach, she used her fitness awareness and training to help her own recovery. And in 2021 she became a Cancer Exercise Specialist (CES) so she could help other cancer survivors and previvors take care of their health before surgery, during recovery and beyond.

She's now teaming up with Amoena to provide some guidance and encouragement for you in these #Take10withJos videos -- short, valuable advice and exercises that you can always find right here.

Workout #1: Range of Motion Before Breast Surgery

For the best outcomes with exercise after breast cancer surgery, you'll want to start before surgery if you can. This introductory video will give you some things to work on as you prepare for a mastectomy or lumpectomy, to ensure you gain back your range of motion later.

Workout #2: Building Core Strength

Our second video in this series features on-the-ground exercises for pre- or post-breast surgery. We're focused on the core muscles, because after breast surgery when your upper body is recovering, you'll need a strong core to help you sit, stand and get up from lying down.

Workout #3: Range of Motion After Surgery

This post-mastectomy stretching video focuses on post-surgery, to help you gain back your range of motion. We use resistance bands; if you don't have those, you can use a broomstick or a towel instead. Your range of motion may be less than Coach Jos' -- use her movements as your goal.
