The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery, 3rd ed.

The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook

Kathy Steligo has earned her status as an authority on breast cancer recovery and reconstruction -- starting with her own personal history. Diagnosed twice (11 years apart), she has had five biopsies, two lumpectomies, radiation, sentinel node biopsy, genetic counseling, genetic testing, bilateral mastectomies, implant reconstruction, and a second GAP reconstruction.

Her book, now in its third edition, and her website www.breastrecon.com, are a testament to her keen talent as a health writer for "laypeople." Ten years after the first printing, the book remains easy to access and understand. It has been nicely updated and is in-step with the many changes that have occurred in breast care since 2003.

The first chapters hinge on decision-making. Mastectomy versus lumpectomy, natural tissue or implants, and even "final touches" like how best to recreate nipples. Even more informative are the "what to expect" chapters, which discuss in detail the pre-surgery, day-of, and post-surgery issues you might face. Even if you aren't having reconstruction, these sections are excellent preparation for other breast surgeries which can often be the most unnerving days of a cancer experience.

The book would make a very thoughtful gift for someone who is newly diagnosed and an excellent addition to any healthcare library collection. (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2012).
