HIPAA - What Does It Mean to Me?

In August of 1996, President Clinton signed into law the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”).  One part of this law, called “Administrative Simplification”, was intended to reduce the administrative cost of health care by standardizing the electronic transmission of certain administrative and financial transactions that are currently submitted on paper.  HIPAA was also designed to provide patients greater protection for privacy of their health information.  There are four parts to HIPAA’s Administrative Simplification provisions:  (1) Electronic Transactions and Code Sets, (2) Security, (3) Unique Identifiers, and (4) Privacy.
