Silicone breast forms made by Amoena

Breast prostheses (or breast ‘forms’) and symmetry shapers are used for the care of women after breast cancer. These can be used after mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery or after breast reconstruction with an inadequate cosmetic result.

Breast prostheses should resemble the remaining breast as closely as possible in look and shape, and create a natural body silhouette for women. Well manufactured forms exhibit natural movement behavior, that is, they move naturally when walking and when lying flat. But breast forms do not only play a cosmetic role; there are also medical reasons to wear them. A properly fitting breast form helps prevent secondary complications like lymphedema, bad posture or shoulder and neck problems.

Professional fitters will consider the needs of the individual woman when helping her choose from a variety of breast forms. Among them are silicone breast prostheses with special features, such as a self-adhesive back or a prosthesis whose self-shaping inner layer adapts to the individual’s chest wall or scar area. The main consideration is, of course, the wearer’s comfort. Each breast form’s silicone cup adapts quickly to body temperature, so the prosthesis is not perceived as a separate body part. In addition, innovative technologies have been developed that offer acute temperature regulation in some breast forms, giving each woman a high level of comfort and pleasantly dry skin. Especially for women undergoing hormone therapy or menopause, or during physical activity which may cause sweating, there are even prostheses with removable absorbent soft pads.

This broad range of silicone breast prostheses with specific shapes, material properties and possible applications is the basis for optimal care. Breast forms can answer to the personal situation and the particular needs of every woman. Partial shapers can even be worn by women who have naturally unequal breasts, to improve their self confidence and body image.

To securely hold a breast prosthesis or partial shaper, there are specially designed bras with integrated pockets. While still beautiful, these bras have clever tailoring – features like a slightly higher neckline and underarm, and soft padded straps – to address the unique needs of the women who wear breast prostheses. Because swimming is a helpful exercise for women after breast surgery, special swimwear has also been designed with similar features. Pockets  securely hold the breast forms in the water and allow comfortable movement and a natural silhouette.

An individual consultation and fitting is carried out by trained personnel – certified mastectomy fitters -- in boutiques or medical stores.
